I chose a Muslim Mosque for my site visit in Miami Gardens which is call Masjid. A Mosque is a building in which Muslims worship God. The religion is Islam and Islam means â€Å"submission to the will of God.†Islam teaches belief in only one God, the Day of Judgment and individual accountability for actions. Islam greatly values peace. Islam shares the same Abrahamic heritage as Judaism and Christianity and, therefore, espouses many similar beliefs and practices. Among them are belief in angels, prophets and scriptures and practices such as prayer, fasting and charity.Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. To become Muslim, a person of any race or culture must say a simple statement, the shahadah, that bears witness to the belief in the One God and that Muhammad is a prophet of God. Mosque come in all shapes and sizes depends on the Muslim populations in certain areas. The one I went to is the largest Mosque in South Florida. The Mosque is 2,500 square and is organized by committee call the Muslim Associated with the ISNA( Islamic Society of North America). Participants come from different nations including Pakistan, India, Iran, Turkey, and Bosnia , as well as countries in Africa and South America. Most Muslim who attend this Mosque is Immigrant and some are converts born in the US. The mosque is open to every Muslim. By stepping outside society the hippies were able to look objectively and see what was wrong with it; they saw what they wanted to change. They rushed to break the barriers put up by society and shattered the mold on music and art, creating a new and distinct sound. The new sound started in 1964 when the Battles arrived in America and took the country by storm. Within two years other British bands as well as Americas own Detroit sound Mouton, and folk-rock groups dominated the airwaves. The lyrics, oldies, and look of the new artists were different and exhilarating. The hippies who were just entering their teens when the Battles arrived became of age when folk-rock groups began to question America through their songs. The nonconformist folk artists began to surface. They wrote songs not just on love and peace but their songs had messages, which questioned society as a whole. One of the biggest artists who influenced the music at this time was Bob Dylan, Between 1963 and 1964, he gradually emerged as the undisputed leader Of the hopeful protest movement (Chambers 99). Dylan fused folk music and rock and roll together to form a sound that served as a platform for social criticism and political statements. One of the sign efficient ways the new type of music along with the culture of the hippies spread was through music festivals. The festivals were usually several days long and had a streamline of musical talent. In 1966, The Trips Festival of San Francisco was a three-day concert located in Longshoremans Hall. The summer of 1967 ended with the Acid Test Graduation Ceremony and focused mainly on drug experimentation. The influence of psychedelic drugs and counterculture are evident in the Battles controversial songs such as Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and l am the Walrus from the albums Sergeant peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour. Along with the Battles, The Rolling Stones also continued to cause controversy amongst American listeners with their provocative lyrics (Brash, Britton 160-162). The Stones continued to push the envelope regarding sexual and artistic expression in music inspired by the hippie movement.The British invasion added a harder edge to American rock music and illustrated how far the counterculture ideas had spread. The acid rock sound of the Sixties brought new elements to rock music. Artists such as Janis Joplin, Jim Hendrix, The Steve Miller Band, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, and Crosby Stills Nash and Young were using more of an electric and amplified sound in their music. Psychedelic drugs such as acid were not yet illegal in the United States and most hippies experimented with LSI under the belief that they had expanded the soul and the mind. Marijuana was also commonly used. Even before what we consider as the beginnings of the Romantic period, the actual expression Romantic was already in use, especially in 17th century England, where this term was applied to a certain character of a piece of literature, describing the absence of the real, the concrete, the predictable and the rational2. A bit later on, the word Romantic was associated with the fantastic, the supernatural as well as the free imagination. In general, the term Romanticism is applied very freely to the literary as well as the artistic movements of the late 18th and early 19th century. I am basing my Theory and Application on both Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory and Locke’s Goal Setting Theory. Theory and Application Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was first published by psychologist Abraham Maslow in his 1943 article, â€Å"A Theory of Human Motivation â€Å". Abraham Maslow believed that that as humans strive to meet our most basic needs, we also seek to satisfy a higher set of needs. Maslow presented these needs in a hierarchy that consisted of the following: 1. Physiological/bodily needs. 2. Safety needs. 3. Love/belonging needs. 4. Self-esteem. 5. Self-actualization. I am going to describe each level in the hierarchy of needs and evaluate them in terms of evidence that shows that they work and that they are useful for managers in understanding how they might motivate their staff. The example I am using is Understanding and motivating health care employees: integrating Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, training and technology by Suzanne G. Benson PhD and Stephen P. Dundis JD, PhD. With all the challenges facing the health sector, there was a need to understand how the managers could motivate the staff. This was becoming increasingly concerning and this is where Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs proved useful. Maslow created a pyramid split into 5 levels, each containing one of the 5 needs. Level 1 Physiological needs: Physiological needs are the basic survival needs such as oxygen, food, water, shelter etc. Unless these basic needs are fulfilled, the individual will be unable to move to the next level, as these are these needs are needed for survival. In work terms, these basic needs would be wages. If an employee is being paid fairly he/she will be happy to move to the next level of the hierarchy. If not, they will be thinking about why they aren’t being paid fairly and the next levels won’t be in their mind. Level 2 Safety Needs: When physiological needs are fulfilled, safety needs come into consideration. This involves not only a safe working environment but mental safety. In this case training has a big influence because workers see training as a way of being safe. Managers must make employees realise that with new technology brings change. Employees feel that they are under pressure with the new technology leading to advancements in computers. They feel they are inadequately trained and this is where managers must spend resources, time and money on training. Level 3 Love/ Belonging Needs: Maslow states that people seek to overcome feelings of loneliness and alienation and managers must understand this to ensure employee involvement, production and motivation, etc. With the new technology in healthcare, brings in the new ‘virtual teaming’. Some employees might feel a lack of social presence that face to face contact has. Managers must know this and that the opportunities to participate in new and different work groups can definitely expand an employee’s belongingness. Level 4 Self-Esteem: Self-esteem in a workplace is usually based on an employee’s successful performance appraisals, which helps employee’s feel valued and respected within an organisation. This boosts self-esteem. In the case of the healthcare problem, there was an issue with the technology because employees where not known by name anyone but by numbers. When employees are not being interacted with personally by managers and other group members they feel insulted and meaningless. Managers must take this into consideration. Level 5 Self-Actualisation: The need for self-actualisation is only relevant when all needs below Self-Actualisation are fulfilled. It is the need for an employee to do what he/she feels they are meant to do. In the healthcare training, an employee should be exposed to learning that affects every single part of his/her life. The new technology offers this training but a person must be shown the right path towards the correct training in order for it to become meaningful. Managers play a role in doing this. Locke’s Goal Setting Theory Dr Edwin Locke found from research that specific and difficult goals led to  better performance than easy goals. Easy goals are not a motivating force whereas if a goal is hard, you feel more accomplished after completing it. The harder the goal, the greater the effort. This helps motivate employees because they will grow in confidence once they complete a difficult task. Goals help push employees to goal-relevant actions rather than concentrating on irrelevant matters. I believe that this is true and to motivate goals must have: 1. Clarity. 2. Challenge. 3. Commitment. 4. Feedback. 5. Task complexity. Clarity When goals are clear and specific there is less chance that there will be a misunderstanding. Managers should make goals measurable with a definitive time set for completion, and this will in turn leave the task/goal a lot more precise. If an employee is set a clear objective he/she is then motivated towards one thing. If the goal is unclear employees will be less motivated. The goal should be Smart, Measureable and Time-bound (SMART acronym). Challenge Usually employees feel that if a goal is very challenging and they complete it, then the manager will be impressed. This motivates an employee because they will feel accomplished and important to the company. Rewards may also boost motivation because with greater challenges comes greater rewards, so therefore managers must give employees challenging but realistic goals in order to motivate their staff. Challenges must be realistic because employees will feel demotivated if they are unable to complete the challenge. The goal should be Achievable (SMART Acronym). Commitment Goals can be agreed upon between managers and employees. This gives the employee a sense of involvement and they are more likely to be committed to a goal if they have been involved in creating the goal and making decisions. Goals should be consistent and credible in order for the commitment to be there. If a goal is difficult it will require a lot more commitment compared  to and easy goal therefore employees will be motivated to get the goal completed. Agreed goals will lead to commitment (SMART Acronym). Feedback Employees must get feedback about their goals from their managers in order to clarify expectations and to gain recognition. Goals can be broken down into parts when it is going to take a particularly long time to reach a goal. Feedback can then be given after each part in order to get a task done efficiently. Regular encouragement will motivate employees to reaching a goal. Task Complexity When a goal is very difficult, employees should be given sufficient time to reach the goal. If the employee is stressed out then they will be demotivated. Employees should be given time to practice what is needed to reach the goal. Difficult tasks can frustrate employees and managers have to deal with this by giving them sufficient time and training needed to complete the task. Conclusion: I believe that both Maslow’s and Locke’s theories provide a useful knowledge into how to keep an employee motivated in the workplace. Goal setting is the best theory in my opinion because it is a simple step by step way on how to reach a goal without demotivating your employees. Reflection and Application The theory that best explains my motivation to perform in DCU is the Goal Setting Theory. I feel this best describes my motivation to perform because I always set out goals in life, whether they are small goals or big goals. For example one of my goals in DCU is to finish with a Masters in Engineering after 5 years. This is a big goal and it requires a lot of motivation and time. I am motivated towards my goal of passing all my modules because I know what each module consists of. Challenge I am motivated towards finishing the first year of my course and passing each module because my course is difficult. When I finish my course I will feel accomplished in what I have done. I also know that if I do well, it will be well received at home because they also know that it is a difficult course. I see this as a reward because if the course was easy I would not be as motivated to do well. Commitment Getting involved in setting out goals also gets me motivated. In order to develop a consistent practice to eat foods based on the recommended dietary allowance, one should learn the importance of developing such a habit followed by incorporating those habits into the lifestyle. Obesity is truly the main concern with regards to diet today as we eat little of fresh foods and more of processed foods. It is difficult to make choices from all kinds of food and have them all in a day. Therefore, the wisest thing, which I believe is to slowly incorporate all the foods from the food pyramid, one by one. My nutritional habits, since the Healthy Eating Plan paper have not changed much. It is a bit difficult for me to proceed for milk products everyday if I am having grains and beans (as well as meats) the following day. I believe the major reason for this is the satiety value of these foods. Over the period of three days of nutritional tracking of the foods that I had consumed, I believe I have consumed fewer quantities of it compared to what is needed to be consumed. It is an alarming issue but it can be resolved slowly through regular nutritional monitoring. This would include making healthy food choices and avoiding processed foods as much as possible. To be rational in the understanding of making the right choices of food, it is essential to follow the food pyramid. Although I did try my best to eat from each food group, I lacked in some way or the other as I believe there should be a more fluent plan that enables the people to eat healthy foods easily. For instance, I had milk products only on the first day of my nutritional tracking. The rest two days were without any milk products. This meant almost no calcium for two days, which I believe is not good as well. After a research into how I can make my diet have varied foods, I have found the following below very effective in devising my plan for healthy eating habits and proceed in the right direction, â€Å"Eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Try picking from the rainbow of colors available to maximize variety. Eat non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, carrots, broccoli or green beans with meals. Choose whole grain foods over processed grain products. Try brown rice with your stir fry or whole wheat spaghetti with your favorite pasta sauce. Include dried beans (like kidney or pinto beans) and lentils into your meals. Include fish in your meals 2-3 times a week† (American Diabetes Association, n.d.). Therefore, such a plan devised above will help me make the healthiest food choices. I believe that being aware of healthy eating issues helps in slow development of nutritional eating habit that would consist of foods specified in the right amounts and as mentioned in the Recommended Dietary Allowance. The main reason as to why I have not been able to change much of my dietary habits over the past three days of tracking has been mainly due to the monotonous foods I had in my diet. This made my diet boring. Creativity is the essence of making anything interesting and therefore, varied foods with a varied sense of consuming them (such as proper garnishing through herbs and choosing foods of different colors and tastes) does help one to move towards a healthy diet. It is interesting to note how we are responsible for our own behaviors towards food. We decide what we want to eat and what we don’t and therefore, there is no forcing business involved in it. Gordon Wood’s Radicalism of the American Revolution is a book that extensively covers the origin and ideas preceding the American Revolution. Wood’s account of the Revolution goes beyond the history and timeline of the war and offers a new encompassing look inside the social ideology and economic forces of the war. Wood explains in his book that America went through a two-stage progression to break away from the Monarchical rule of the English. He believes the pioneering revolutionaries were rooted in the belief of an American Republic. However, it was the radical acceptance of democracy that was the final step toward independence. The transformation between becoming a Republic, to ultimately becoming a democracy, is where Wood’s evaluation of the revolution differs from other historians. He contributes such a transformation to the social and economic factors that faced the colonists. While Gordon Wood creates a persuasive argument in his book, he does how ever neglect to consider other contributing factors of the revolution. It is these neglected factors that provide opportunity for criticism of his book. The overall feeling one gets from reading Wood’s book is that republicanism was not a radical concept to the American colonists. Wood believed the American colonists had a deep- rooted concept of Republicanism that existed before revolutionary ideas were conceived. The idea of republicanism could be seen in the colonial belief in independence and self-sacrifice. These principles were the founding forces that led to the beginning of the revolution. Wood would seem to believe that these founding forces were not as radical as the transformation to democratic thought. It is here that Wood points out the â€Å"uncontrolla... ... social and economic forces with those of traditional forces his book would have a better claim on legitimacy. Gordon Wood gives an interesting insight into the Revolution. Overall, I find Wood’s argument to be persuasive and refreshing. There is little doubt that the forces that Wood proclaims as significant in his history of the Revolution are important. However, it is this same concentration on non-traditional forces that leads to my criticism of his book. Wood should not have focused entirely on his commonly overlooked social and economic forces. Instead, he should have combined his insight along with the insight of other traditional forces to give his book a well-rounded theory behind the American Revolution. Work Cited Gordon S. Wood.
